It’s Earth Day!! What are you going to do to make a difference?

Do you think it says anything that it’s raining in Kansas City on Earth Day?
Maybe Mother Earth isn’t happy with the way KC’s been treating her? Or maybe it’s just an April shower that will soon follow with May flowers?

However you look at it I hope you are thinking about what you can do!
Take a minute and get the facts!! Read more about the core issues here- http://www.earthday.org/core-issues

Maybe going to the Farmers Market or car pooling doesn’t fit in to your busy schedule, but something does! Everyone can to make time to make a difference! Once you find out how easy it is you’ll want to do more!

You know you hate all that random junk mail, right? Well get ride of it! Go to the company’s website and take your address OFF the mailing list, yes you can do that!

How about signing up for E-bill rather than checking your mail box for bills you don’t want and are going to through out eventually anyway.

The Pet Connection Needs Our Help!! Please Read & Spread the Word!!

Effective immediately, The Mission Pet Connection will be closing its adoption center Mondays through Fridays until enough money can be raised to reopen. We will still be open on weekends and adoptions can be done by appointment during the week. In the past three months we have been under extensive scrutiny from several different agencies. We have been inspected by the state veterinary board, the state animal health department, the fire department, and the city because of “anonymous complaints” or “routine inspections”. We may have made someone mad or it may all just be a strange coincidence, but either way, we have needed to use the majority of our time and resources handling these repeated inspections. Lawyer fees and extra staff time have drained our bank account.

We need help to raise enough money to reopen our doors. We want to continue to help the thousands of animals we help each year through our adoption center and clinic. We want to continue to provide assistance to other rescue shelters and rescue groups so that they can help more pets. But we also need to prepare ourselves in case we need to shut our doors forever. As hard as it is, we are currently no longer taking in cats or large dogs to prepare ourselves in case we have to close for good. Many organizations and animals rely on our care.

With enough money we can re-open our doors to the public every day and can begin taking in dogs and cats into our shelter again. This bump in the road only has to be a small set back to the overall good that we provide to this community.

Please contact Melody Kelso and/or Jason Huff for details on how to help and/or for details on an informational meeting that will be held in the next few days to explain the circumstances to those interested. Donations can be made at www.thepetconnection.net or by coming to our facility. Jack 105 will be having a live remote at our facility on Saturday from 10A-12N to help raise needed sponsorships. Address: 5918 Broadmoor, Mission. KS 66202.

Egg-xcellent Idea’s for Your Leftover Easter Eggs!!

Of course the obvious ones are always good… egg sandwich

Egg Salad

Potato Salad

Egg Sandwich, with cheese of course!

Deviled Eggs

Deviled Egg dip

BLT with Egg

Eggs are good chopped or diced in any green Salad or Pasta Salad, the possibilities are endless!!

Use the left over hard boiled eggs to add texture to Mashed Potatoes, Meatloaf or even Macaroni!!

I made a yummy breakfast skillet by sauteing hash brown’s, onions, bell peppers, and bacon, then I threw in the chopped egg at the end added cheese on top and it was better than Denny’s lol

Also try toasting an English Muffin and topping it with a tomato basil spread, sliced hard boiled egg, fresh tomato and some cheese, add a little paprika if you like… delish!

If you don’t like Eggs or just sick of them you can always peel the shells and use them in a garden or house plant. Give the egg  to your dog and then put him outside, I’ve heard giving eggs to a dog can cause some major gas lol

If you’re still looking for ways to get ride of your Eggs, I suggest giving them to someone who has a garden and a dog.

Or maybe offer them up to your Apartment Community for their garden =)

Remember if you plan on eating them still you better hurry! Experts say eggs are good for 1 week after being boiled as long as they are not cracked.

Happy Egg Eating!

Day Light Savings is THIS SUNDAY!! YEAH!!!

springThat’s right this Sunday! So that means this Saturday March 13th, before you go to bed set your clocks an hour EARLIER!!

The phrase “Spring forward, Fall back” helps me and others I’m sure remember!

In the Spring you spring forward with an extra hour

In the Fall you fall back leaving an hour behind

Kinda silly but once you hear it, it’s hard to forget!

There have been changes to Day Light Savings as recently as 2007, You can get more info on those changes and reasoning here-  http://geography.about.com/cs/daylightsavings/a/dst.htm

Did you know the idea of Day Light Savings goes back all the way to Benjamin Franklin! In 1784 he wrote an essay entitled “an Economical Project” and outlined his ideas, kind of interesting read. http://www.webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/c.html

I’m soo ready for evening walks again!!!!

The truth about “Sell by”, “Best by” and “Expiration Dates”

Reading this article  might change how you feel about expiration dates!

expire

http://www.slate.com/id/2244249?yahoo=y

Everyone has encountered that moment more than once…

Going for the milk or eggs and you notice the sell by date was 3 days ago! What about that steak you’ve been thawing for days.

If your anything like me, you wouldn’t eat it…. BUT my hubby would, he’s always been the type to eat or drink anything if it smells or looks ok regardlessof the “best By” or “Sell by” date. I used to think he was gross… maybe now I don’t.

How do you feel after reading the article?

Ginger’s simple opinion is… READING THIS COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!!

texting-while-driving-ban
It seems cell phones are necessary for most people now days. It would be hard to get through a day with out mine so I’ll admit it, when I heard that cell phones were being banned from vehicles I almost laughed out loud. I mean who can’t handle talking on the phone and driving at the same time? Isn’t that like walking and chewing gum for most of us?

This is not a joke though and most of us aren’t really even aware of the deadly problem.
This week Oprah Winfrey launched her new campaign, The “NO PHONE ZONE”.
It’s supported by the US Department of Transportation and urges everyone to put the phones down while they are driving.

Oprah’s show on the growing trend of DWD (Driving While Distracted) aired Monday Jan. 25th and can be viewed in full on her website, its worth watching, even if you’re not an Oprah fan.

So what is all the fuss about? Why is using a hand held devise in a car illegal in 9 states, why is it illegal to text and drive in 19 states, and why is Oprah launching this new campaign?
Well, after reading this you’ll know why and you won’t be laughing.

A study by The Harris Poll Company says that 73% of people that have a cell phone, us them while driving regularly.

The US DOT website says that nearly 6,000 people are killed and roughly 500,000 people are injured each year due to drivers talking, text messaging and emailing behind the wheel.

If that’s not enough for you to put the phone down, maybe this will be.

Car and Drivers Magazine did an article this summer on the stop times for a variety of different driving scenarios. The results varied with each driver but the average results are not good! Let me break it down…

Unimpaired drivers with no distractions braked in .54 seconds and stop at their destination point.
A legally drunk person, you can add 4 feet to the stopping point
Someone reading an e-mail: add 36 feet
Someone sending a text message: add 70 feet

So are they saying the sober person texting/email is more dangerous than the drunk driver?
Unfortunately yes, this is the finding in several surveys. I’ll write it again just so you know you read it correctly. In many studies texting & emailing while driving proves to be more of an impairment than driving drunk.

So incase you didn’t know, now you do! Driving while texting/ emailing is a dangerous act.
Just as dangerous as drinking and driving.
Now that you know, it’s your responsibility to tell friends and family, it might just save someone’s life.

You can sign a pledge to stop texting/emailing while driving here: http://www.oprah.com/quest ionaire/ipledge.html?id=4

Almost 59,000 people have signed it in the last 4 days… I did, will you?

No one leaves their home expecting to get in a car accident, it just happens; by putting your phone down you are doing what you can to make sure it doesn’t just happen to you.

Cheers to safer driving from now on!
~ Ginger
